The Dekopon
The Dekopon is a large, sweet, easy-to-peel, and nearly seedless hybrid mandarin orange, scientifically known as Citrus reticulata 'Shiranui'.
The Dekopon is considered one of the most successful breeding achievements in citrus history. It was created in Japan in 1972 by crossing two other hybrids:
Kiyomi Tangor: A cross between a Satsuma mandarin and a sweet orange.
Ponkan Mandarin: A high-sugar Chinese/Indian mandarin.
It's famous for its distinctive "top knot" bump and is marketed as "Sumo Citrus" in the US.
It has high sugar content and very low acidity, making it taste "explosively" sweet compared to a standard orange.
It's a highly prized citrus variety for both commercial and home growers.
So if you like oranges try the Dekopon. It just might become your favorite.
