Thomas Paine - The Englishman who started the American Revolution

He published a pamphlet called Common Sense in January 1776.

Before this pamphlet was published, most American colonists were aiming for better treatment from Great Britain, not total independence. Paine changed the conversation entirely. He used plain, forceful language to argue that monarchy was an absurd form of government and that separation from Britain was just "common sense."

It became a bestseller and prepared the public for the Declaration of Independence.

HIS LIFE
Born in Thetford, England in 1737. He spent his early life failing at several careers, including stay-making (making corset supports) and working as an excise tax officer. Years after the amazing events of 1776 he returned to America in 1802 but was widely ostracized for his radical religious views. He died poor in New York City; only six people attend his funeral.
