Abortion - And the vanishing of Nations
In China approx 40% of all pregnancies are aborted. In the UK it's 30% and the US is 17%.
But abortions are only one factor in population decline. The major factor is the Total Fertility Rate (TFR). This is the average number of children a woman bears during her lifetime. A TFR of 2.1 is the critical number needed to sustain the population. Anything less means a population is decling. Anything more means a population is growing.
Africa has a TFR of 4.0 and for the US it's 1.6 which is well below the critical level, so the US population is slowly and consistently declining. Australia is 1.4, a little worse than the US. But some countries are in a very serious situation. Japan is 1.1, South Korea is 0.8 and vanishing fast. Taiwan is the world's lowest at 0.7
Tech Notes:
TFR is critical for population change, but it excludes immigration.
