Alien Contact - Here's what will happen
Let's suppose it's finally occured - we've been contacted by an alien civilization from somewhere out there in the universe.
This is no longer science fiction. We need to get this right or we could be in big trouble. So what happens next?
The first thing we notice is that they speak fluent English. This is a real shock until we realize that their computers spent about 20 seconds analysing our spoken language. They deconstructed it, reconstructed it and simulated it with total accuracy. So their English is better than our English.
But after this fun start things turn ominous. Very ominous. Let me explain why.
Consider fish. They are wonderful animals. They swim, they feed, they reproduce. But you're not going to find a fish that understands calculus. That's a topic for more advanced brains.. like ours.
This advanced civilization will treat us just like we treat fish. They will be kind, but amused that our brains are not sophisticated enough to understand X, where X is the basic concept governing the universe.
Sure, they could try explaining X to us. But have you ever tried explaining calculus to a fish?
